Website hacked? Here's what to do

If your website has been hacked: put it into maintenance mode, change your hosting, WordPress admin and database passwords, and don't delete anything yet — infected files are evidence of how the attacker got in. Then get the site professionally cleaned. GOGO Media in Petaling Jaya cleans hacked websites for businesses across Malaysia, starting from RM1,000.

What to do right now if your website has been hacked

  1. Take the site offline or enable maintenance mode. This stops visitors from seeing defaced pages or picking up malware, and stops Google from indexing the damage.
  2. Change every password — hosting control panel, WordPress admin accounts, FTP/SFTP and the database. Use a password manager; attackers often get in through reused passwords.
  3. Don't delete files yet. The infected files show how the attacker got in. Delete them too early and the same hole stays open.
  4. Check when your last clean backup was made. If you have one from before the hack, note the date — it may become the fastest way back.
  5. Scan your own computer. If your PC is infected, attackers can steal your new passwords the moment you set them.
  6. Get the site cleaned professionally. Removing malware by hand misses backdoors more often than it finds them. A reinfected site usually gets blacklisted by Google the second time.

How do I know if my website has been hacked?

Common signs: your browser shows a red "Deceptive site ahead" warning, Google search results for your site mention pharmacy or gambling pages you never wrote, customers report being redirected to strange sites, your hosting provider suspends the account, or the site suddenly slows to a crawl. Some hacks show nothing at all — the site looks normal while it quietly sends spam or hosts phishing pages.

Will my Google rankings recover after a hack?

Usually, yes — if the site is cleaned quickly and Google is told about it. Once the malware is removed we submit the site for review, and the browser warnings typically clear within a few days. Rankings recover gradually after that. The real damage happens when a site stays infected for weeks or gets reinfected after a bad cleanup.

Can I stop my website from being hacked again?

Cleaning fixes the symptom; maintenance prevents the repeat. GOGO takes care of your website's backend updates and backs up your files on a regular schedule, so if anything ever happens again you always have a recent clean copy to restore. That way you can focus on running your business instead of watching your website.
